If you had tried to warn people about Fukushima back in the 1950′s as many countries were implementing nuclear reactors you would have been laughed at. Nuclear power was going to make it possible for each of us to have a flying car and robot slave. It would make electricity so cheap to make that metering it not be cost effective. http://www.ibiology.org/ibiomagazine/renewable-energy-generation-transmission-storage.html Steven Chu walks us through the advances we’ve made and the challenges we still face as we transition from a fossil fuel economy to one based on renewables such as wind and solar. He speaks of the need to develop lighter, cheaper, rapidly charging batteries to speed the transition to affordable, functional, electric vehicles. He also stresses the need to support research into technologies such as carbon recycling that would make energy production truly sustainable. Chu ends his talk by reminding us that the Earth is our home and we need to commit to caring for it. Speaker Biography: Steven Chu is Professor of Physics and Molecular & Cellular Physiology and the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. From 2009 to 2013, he served as US Secretary of Energy. At the time of his appointment to the Cabinet, he was a Professor of Physics and Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Chu’s research focuses on the development and application of new optical nano-particles for the study of biological systems and organisms. He is also working with Prof. Yi Cui, Stanford, on next generation batteries for electric vehicles. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997 for his work at Bell Labs on cooling and trapping of atoms with laser light. Remco van der Horst, COO of renewable energy crowdinvesting company Duurzaaminvesteren and founder of consultancy Greenproc, was one of the key people who organized meetings for me during my cleantech tour of the Netherlands last year. Ironically, because my on-camera chat with him and Christiaan van Nispen of energy giant RWE was so long and interesting (and not focused on news or very timely matters), it's one of the last ones I've gotten to editing and publishing ... but I finally have. Here's a rundown of the chat if you don't have time to watch it all or want to jump to specific sections: * Dutch energy policy: Remco noted that the Netherlands lost its leadership position in the wind industry, but things are likely to pick up due to a push from the EU (looming renewable energy targets the NL has to hit). * Energy companies have to find a new role (particularly, as an aggregator or organizer) in the new world order of energy, Christian added. * One of the reasons for the NL's delay in moving forward with a transition to renewable energy is simply the sunk costs/investments in old/dirty power plants, and a willingness to let them keep running and then transition more to renewables when they retire. * Remco talked a bit about renewable energy subsidies in the Netherlands, but then highlighted that subsidies are basically an inadequate way of trying to balance the market since we don't have power companies internalizing the true cost of pollution and carbon emissions. * Christian spoke a bit about the advantages of Tesla's Supercharger network. * Speaking about EV subsidies in the Netherlands, Remco mentioned that electric cars charging on public streets in Amsterdam don't have to pay for parking, but a later interview with Hans Verwijs of EV charging company Blue Corner said that is no longer the case -- even electric car drivers have to pay for parking now. * We transitioned into a chat about the energy efficiency startup work Christian had been working on before moving to RWE. * We also talked a little bit about the electricity markets in the Netherlands and Germany. * At the time of the interview, Christian was working on smart home stuff within RWE. (Now, he's moved onto something else we'll probably write about another day.) * Then we launched into a chat about Remco's work at a renewable energy crowdinvesting startup. A nice thing about his startup is that you can invest fairly low amounts (€250 or more) and just need to be a Dutch citizen and have a Dutch bank account. That's a very accessible option for investing in renewable energy which startups in the US have not been able to offer (unfortunately). * Remco then delved into the clean energy transition and how poorly large corporations and large countries are adjusting to and facilitating the transition. * Christian then told us a bit about smart meters, including more advanced ones that allow granular data collection in segments just minutes or even seconds apart. * Naturally, we also somehow transitioned into a discussion about going off the grid versus participating in one of the biggest and oldest forms of the now-popular "sharing economy." The discussion, of course, reflects discussions we've had many times in the comments under CleanTechnica articles. * We wrapped up the on-camera chat by talking about energy desegregation and smart appliances. A lot of fun stuff, and one of the most enjoyable chats about renewable energy and cleantech that I think I've ever had. A huge thanks to Remco and Christian for spending the time.

For additional information about this presentation please see the BLOG entry at http://smartscarecrow.com/2012/10/20121008-the-alternative-energy-hour-with-joel-garbon/ Tonight's topic of discussion: Unintended Consequences As new technologies are introduced, there are always unintended consequences. Just 20 years ago if you had warned of brain tumors and cell damage due to cellular telephones you would have been laughed at. Cell phones have been adopted by more people faster than any other technology released. Today many people wonder why anyone would have a hard wired land line telephone when cellular technology can deliver so much more convenience and flexibility. With each technological advancement, there are consequences. Today we giggle about the buggy whip manufacturers who failed when the automobile became predominant. Some wonder if the automobile would ever have been allowed to exist if the buggy whip manufacturers had strong lobbies on Capitol Hill. Tonight we will consider this scenario. What might be the unintended consequences should some unforeseen exotic energy technology become readily available. What might be the economic and social impact of such an event. Some would say that such a thing will usher in a new era of prosperity and share a Gene Rodenberry vision of a Star Trek future world. Others are somewhat more guarded in their expectations. Either way, this is a topic that should be considered as a hand full of such exotic energy technologies seem poised to enter the market place in the near future. Tonight's guest: Joel Garbon will join host Gary Hendershot to consider the issue Joel Garbon serves as President of the nonprofit The New Energy Movement (www.NewEnergyMovement.org), which educates about breakthrough energy technologies and their implications for human society and our imperiled planet, while also serving as an advocate organization for inventors of these technologies. He is a founding member of New Energy Congress (www.NewEnergyCongress.org), which maintains a publicly viewable database of the most promising breakthrough energy technologies. Garbon is the author of an historic legislative draft titled Energy Innovation Act of 2007 which serves as a template for new energy legislation on the federal, state, local, and international levels. The legislation's provisions call for urgent and serious public support for research and development of breakthrough energy technologies, and was presented to senators and representatives in the United States Congress. Garbon received a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Science from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He has worked for nearly 30 years as an international industrial science consultant and educator within the chemical, pulp and paper, water treatment, and building products industries. He is the inventor and developer of several successful commercial technologies used within these industries. Garbon is co-author with investigative journalist Jeane Manning of the award-winning book BREAKTHROUGH POWER: How Quantum-Leap New Energy Inventions Can Transform Our World (www.breakthroughpower.net) which chronicles the challenges, opportunities, and progress in the new energy technology field. The authors make the appeal for a "tidal wave of wisdom" and the concurrent evolution of energy technology and human consciousness as foundations for a new era on planet Earth. Bitcoin’s underlying protocol, called “the blockchain”, is a distributed consensus-driven infrastructure enabling trust between connected assets. While currently considered only a financial tool, the blockchain’s actual capability is extremely broad. Just as advances in TCP/IP created vast opportunities for the internet, the blockchain is enabling us to rethink the basic infrastructure of how energy is distributed, accounted for and secured. **Bonus Demo:** Be sure to watch at the end of this talk, as a Bitcoin transfer from Cambridge in real time buys electricity for a small school in South Africa.

A review of the top free energy news stories of the past month! Sterling D. Allan, founder and CEO, has been immersed in new energy technology since the spring of 2001. He was launched into the field by working toward arranging a trip by Mike Brady to demonstrate his all-magnet Perendev magnet motor in the United States, founding the company Perentech. In September of that year, he began what turned into a daily energy news service, FreeEnergyNews.com. He launched PES Network, Inc. in November 2003 primarily to open source feasible free energy devices. In August of 2004, he launched http://PESWiki.com as a publicly editable energy directory and project site. Look for his handle, "SilverThunder" at PESWiki. Then in Sept. 2005, he launched the New Energy Congress. Related web sites: PESWiki.com is a publicly editable site with an extensive directory and encyclopedia. It is where most of our open source energy projects are housed. Because anyone (who does not abuse the privilege) can edit the site, it is great for collaborative work. PESN.com is where we post news stories of our own composing, as well as an occasional press release that we wish to feature. FreeEnergyNews.com is our daily news site, and also contains an extensive topical directory. (Home page redirects to PESWiki) PureEnergySystems.com is the corporate website of PES Network, Inc.
